TBHE and I started watching Las Vegas on Peacock Plus. It’s fun and aged pretty well, though I forgot how booby everything used to be. It puts some of our less glorious history (girls gone wild, victoria’s secret) in context. In an episode guest staring Brookes and Dunn, the duo sings a song about a woman who wants a man who won’t cheat, and it’s played over shots of the characters showing their feelings for each other. In another episode, cheating once again comes up as the bar.
When I was in college, one of our “would you rather” questions was be cheated on or have them die. I always chose die, because then at least I’d know I’d been loved. (Oops, my daddy issues are showing.) These were the worst relationship things we could think of. This probably excluded abuse because that has never been excusable, and also we were lucky enough to not have been exposed to it. Or maybe because we didn’t know anyone who was abused and ended the relationship. The only reason we thought relationships ended was cheating or death.
Bless our naive souls. A third of the way through my life—because yes I’m going to be killing it to 120yo so I can see the next millennium—I’ve seen a lot of relationships end and very few of them were because of cheating or death. Congrats to us for not dying and also taking our vows seriously. But, still, I’ve seen a lot of divorces.
